The Master’s in Computing Science with Specialization in Multimedia, the MM program, trains graduates for challenging multimedia research and development in industry. Since its launch in 2015, over 250 students from diverse backgrounds have graduated into roles as data scientists, game developers and software engineers. Over the years, millions in funding have supported student internships. The program is co-op (internship-based), on-campus and full-time, runs about two years, and admits each Fall. It is directed by Professor Irene Cheng.
Four alumni, four routes through the program:
Gavin (Zichen) Gui (2024) built his foundation in machine learning and virtual reality, interned at McElhanney (a VR solution for spatial planning) and INSA Lyon (a surgical simulation platform), and is now a software engineer at Matrix Labs, a role that came through program alumnus Dr. Xinyao Sun.
Bhaya Sehgal (2023) developed a tree segmentation and pattern-recognition approach during an agricultural co-op, and the experience led straight into a PhD in video-based gait analysis.
Fei Yang (2022) spent an 8-month internship at Edmonton AI firm AltaML working on computer vision, remote sensing and geographic data, published on drone-based cattle monitoring and cryptocurrency market analysis, then continued into a PhD with the group.
Rahul Vyas (2024) took his co-op at Matrix Labs through Adjunct Professor Alvin Sun, and turned it into a full-time product-manager role in AI and blockchain.
Applying: applications open October 1 and close January 31 (international) / July 31 (domestic). Minimum admission: a four-year undergraduate degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 (last two years) and proof of English proficiency.
